  It wouldn't matter. ... though if you want the boring (but maybe interesting) brainiac answer, definitely theirs. Think of it like curses (I know, very topical for talk about declarations of love, innit?). Language learners by and large lack the cultural upbringing that makes certain words and phrases special or taboo. So there's a tiny bit more genuineness to both "I love you" and "F**k you!" if it's coming in the native language of this or that speaker than in one they've learned, in my opinion. Because they have to overcome the taboo, break the glass on a phrase that's only for very special occasions or ones that genuinely intend to hurt people. Of course, once it's clear it is intended genuinely, it doesn't matter if it's in their language or carved out on the door in elder futhark.   If either of us said it in English, I think it would be pretty meaningful, since English speakers don’t normally say it to other people (excluding family) unless we mean it. In Japanese, it depends on which word is used. If it was 愛してる, it’d probably be just as powerful as “I love you” in English, but with 好き and 大好き it depends on the situation, I guess
